Various merit- and eligibility-based financial support is available to entering and continuing graduate students at UCLA. Entering DMA graduate students are offered financial assistance at the time of admission based on the strength of their application; continuing students are usually informed of their financial support before the beginning of their second and third year of study. Additionally, all students are given the opportunity to apply for Teaching Assistantship positions, which offer a quarterly salary and a partial fee remission during the term(s) of employment. First, through the acquisition and development of technical and craft-based skills in various related media. Second, by building a thorough theoretical foundation in media history and theory, and supporting each student’s journey in developing their own unique discursive framework through writing, research, and interdisciplinary engagement with other departments at UCLA. Finally, by helping students hone a sophisticated and compelling body of work, through critiques, seminars, exhibitions and one-on-one mentorship.

Removing many of the geographic barriers and time-based limitations of more traditional degree programs, both programs offer an immersive curriculum that has been optimized for distance learning yet retains the rigor and intensity of an ArtCenter education. For a list of requirements to complete your graduate application, please see the Graduate Division’s Admissions Requirements page. It is also important to check with the program or department of interest, as they may have additional requirements specific to their program of study and degree. To earn the MFA degree, candidates must pass two faculty reviews of their overall artistic and academic progress—once at mid-residence and again prior to graduation. Students are expected to present a project or exhibition during the first year, and required to do so by the end of the second.

Students learn the arts of negotiation, problem solving, mediation, arbitration, systems design, and many other applications of dispute resolution. The program actively incorporates role-plays from varied aspects of human relationships to engage the student in class participation. These exercises provide students with the skill and training necessary to become adept at the art of conflict resolution. The Rutgers MFA in visual arts at Mason Gross School of the Arts was established in 1960 as the first non-disciplinary–specific fine art graduate program in the United States. Today the two-year, full-time program continues to flourish through the rigorous cultivation of dialogue, experimentation, and thinking across disciplines, media, approaches, and perspectives.
If you’re looking to build on a strong foundation in design by studying the “big picture” aspect of designing for interactions, which involves communities, organizations, cultures, contexts, and systems, our MDes program can help you. Throughout the program, you’ll work with some of the brightest thinkers and most talented practitioners in the field, gaining exposure to approaches, ideas, and methods at the forefront of design. Studies rooted in communication, systems thinking, futuring, speculative design, design technology, ethics, and design research form the basis of the MDes. You’ll learn how to apply rigorous processes for documenting, analyzing, and understanding the past and present to propose more desirable systems and interactions for the future.
Exhibit themes include energy efficiency technologies, smart devices for infrastructure and health care, and sensor systems to reduce traffic and improve fuel efficiency. Located on the main floor at the CITRIS and the Banatao Institute Headquarters, the Tech Museum features projects and research from the CITRIS and the Banatao Institute community including prototypes, hands-on displays, and interactive demos. Exhibit themes include energy efficiency technologies, smart devices for infrastructure and health care, and sensor systems to reduce traffic and improve fuel efficiency. The CITRIS Invention Lab supports faculty, student and community innovation by providing the knowledge, tools and support to rapidly design and prototype novel interactive products, embedded sensing systems and integrated mobile devices. This facility is a vital piece of the CITRIS pipeline running from the minds of researchers through CITRIS laboratories, and into the markets, industries, and streets of the world. The Center for New Music and Audio Technologies (CNMAT) houses a dynamic group of educational, performance and research programs focused on the creative interaction between music and technology.

The visibility and interactivity with traditional interfaces is transforming dramatically and rapidly. The MAD program encourages experimentation with interactive that moves beyond traditional scopes and into immersive, whole-body experiences. The Masters of Art + Design program has three potential tracks, depending on the individual’s background and experience prior to entering the program. Students are recommended for acceptance into the Department of Design Media Arts program based on a faculty evaluation of their portfolio, written statements, and official academic records from all higher-education institutions attended after high school. Approximately half of our current graduate students have an undergraduate major in design or a related field, and approximately half do not. For graduates, the normal load during spring and fall is from nine to twelve units per Fall and Spring semester. For international students, immigration regulations require a minimum academic load of twelve units for undergraduates and eight units for graduates for spring and fall semesters.
